Smart Walls For Smart Kids: Okanagan College Child Care Centre

Sustainable Architecture & Building Magazine (or SABMag for short) announced the Canadian Green Building Awards for 2018, including a personal favorite of ours among the winners: the Okanagan College Child Care Centre in Penticton, British Columbia.

This project was named as one of nine Canadian buildings that best demonstrate the possibilities of sustainable design practices, quoting from the award jury:

“As a structure designed to the rigorous Passive House standard, this building is notable for the beauty and simplicity of its environmental systems. The building relies mostly on local materials and very economical passive design strategies, yet also addresses cross-cultural issues and creates a symbolic new gateway to the college campus.”

We see the Okanagan College Child Care Centre as a front runner in a wave of green schools to come. Using the Smart Enclosure as a building philosophy results in facilities that provide the comfort and indoor air quality that help kids excel in their learning evironment, while locking in carbon to ensure their future. Read this post to hear more on the details of the Smart Wall concept, and how it can improve your next project. 475's Western Region Manager, Lucas Johnson, worked with brothers Chris and Nick Hill from Ritchie Custom Homes to specify the complete Pro Clima airsealing system for the Okanagan College Child Care Centre. Chris Hill has since gone on to begin Ritchie Construction, which plans to focus on safe, healthy, and sustainable buidlings.

We congratulate the entire team on completing a project that considered sustainability, landscape, learning environment, and cultural relevance in a building that serves as a bridge between the City of Penticton and the Penticton Indian Reserve.
