Tighter Than Expected
Time to Ventilate Without Compromise
Blower Door Tests for Tightness[/caption]
You made your house airtight....but you made it tighter than you thought you could possibly get. It's so tight - in fact better than 1.5 ACH at 50 Pascals - that you need to ventilate. But you're done with the renovation already. What to do next?
You can't rely on the bath or kitchen exhausts as they are intermittent and terribly inefficient and unreliable for such purposes. You briefly consider the unrealistic option of just opening the windows several times a day. A central high-efficiency HRV would be terrific, and a terrible intervention at that point. Hmmmm....
Exploded view of Lunos e2 ventilation unit[/caption]
The Lunos e2 decentralized through-wall ventilation system with high-efficiency heat recovery offers a sound solution. In a simple, non-invasive and economical manner - with 90% heat recovery efficiency - you can install a ventilation system that provides the needed indoor air quality, comfortably and efficiently. The unit is just 6.25" in diameter and as short as 11.8".
How do they work?
Installed in pairs, and interconnected with control and power wiring, one through-wall unit exhausts air for 70 seconds while the other simultaneously supplies air. As air is exhausted, a ceramic core absorbs the heat energy from the out-going air flow. At the supply unit, heat is being transferred from the ceramic core to the in-coming air flow. After 70 seconds the fans reverse directions, each core absorbing or discharging heat with each cycle. The volume of air any one pair may provide is low, with the standard setting being 18 or 20 CFM. Because the volume of air is low, and the fan engines high-performance, the units are quiet.

How many pair will I need and what's a typical layout?
Typical Apt Layout
On our blog post Sizing Lunos through-wall ventilation units we take a closer look at just how many pair of Lunos units your home may require based on ASHRAE 62.2 requirements - ranging from one pair for a small studio apartment, to four pair for a four bedroom 2,000 sf home. Please have a look at the blog post to find out more.
What about maintenance?
The ceramic core can be easily removed to the inside for vacuuming. Because of the production process, the ceramic core has a self-cleaning "lotus effect", and therefore does not need to be washed. However, if desired the ceramic core can be washed with water or alcohol without damage. Filters are located at the interior side and are easily removable, washable and replaceable.
An optimal solution
The Lunos e2 offers an innovative solution that not only addresses unintentional air tightness, but will help you optimize your home's performance.
